Cannot "replicate" SDK tutorial; undefined reference to "R"

(Get the pun in the title?) This is my first attempt at Android/Replicant development, and I'm trying to recreate the tutorial contained in http://redmine.replicant.us/projects/replicant/wiki/SDK. I set up the file MainActivity.java exactly as it's written in the tutorial. Then I created a resource file called r.xml with exactly the same text as there. But in the MainActivity.java file I'm receiving repeated errors of "R" cannot be resolved to a variable. How can I fix this?
