Huawei Ascend P1 U9200
Added by Allan Mwenda about 11 years ago
Hello,
I would like to suggest the Huawei P1 and/or P1 XL (big battery version) for consideration for replicant.
Minimal requirements
The device must be supported by CyanogenMod officially (better) or via 3rd party repos
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=252882
CM 11 unofficial by spanorg
There must be a way to flash images (via bootloader or recovery) using a free program
http://d-h.st/Q4x
twrp 2.7.1.0 by spanorg
The kernel must not be signed: the bootloader must not check the kernel signature
Dunno how to confirm this
The kernel sources must have been released

CM by spanorg sources

huawei kernel source

B226 Firmware,No Emotion UI
The network type must be GSM, no CDMA phone can be supported for now
Ascend P1 is an Unlocked GSM/3G Smartphone
Good target
Bootloader must be ready to flash images, or be very easy to unlock
Bootloader is unlocked as stated here
http://www.modaco.com/topic/363174-do-i-need-to-unlock-the-bootloader-to-root-p1/
Free user-space implementation for most of the hardware already available
Dunno
Standard or well-known protocols used in the hardware (V4L2/ALSA/NMEA, etc)
Dunno how to check
Firmwares needed only for Wi-Fi/Bluetooth, and not sound, screen, touchscreen, camera, etc
Dunno how to check
Freedom-compliant hardware design: Modem isolation (no shared mem, GPS, audio)
Dunno how to check
Ideal target
Free bootloaders that allow easy flashing for the user
Don't think there is one, does it being unlocked mean it is free?
All the hardware using standard protocols, kernel-drivers and no user-space binary blobs
Dunno how to check
Components that do not require loadable firmware
Dunno how to check
Ways to update the internal firmwares of the chips (for instance to allow a free software modem implementation)
Dounno how to confirm
Total modem isolation (doesn't control audio, nor GPS, mem, NAND, etc)
Dunno how to confirm
    SIM unlock
SIM is not locked on this phone as it works internationally as long as it is not bought from a carrier.
I think it meets the minimum requirements at least. It has a TI OMAP 4 processor,so at least it is not a a "known to be bad" target.
It can be bought cheaply here

Yep, looks like a good target but it is an OMAP HS device, which means that its bootloader cannot be freed. I keep it as a possible next device for Replicant, one we run out of free-bootloader-enabled ones.
