Best smarphone to work with replicant
Added by E D about 10 years ago
Hello,
I wonder what is to your opinion the current best smartphone to work with replicant ?
Especially, I do not have much time, so I am looking for one device with which the
installation process goes smoothly, also one device with best security and privacy practices.
You might have been asked several times this question, but latest answeers one the forum seems to date a little.
Thanks in advance for your help.
Best regards

Our website has a recommendations section:

The installation instructions are about the same for every Samsung device and while they require some technical background, they are rather painless and well-explained on our wiki.
The best device is currently the GTA04, but it is not ready for daily use yet.
The main bottlenecks are power management in the kernel that is somewhat incomplete and the lack of user-space handling of the modem (hence, telephony features and mobile data are not there). We are hopping to see the situation improve and hopefully, the situation will get better over time.
I also wish to inform you that I have been working on the LG Optimus Black (P970) recently, which is a very nice target for freedom and
privacy/security. More information about it is available on my blog:

Repliant support will be available as soon as the bootloader (U-Boot) port is complete.

Hello,
Thank you for your answeer,
I think I will go for the Galaxy S 3 (I9300).
Are front and rear cameras both supported ?
Best regards

Do you think the Samsung Galaxy S3 with version I9305 could work ?
It seems it is like the I9300 but with 4G support.

I answeer to myself, according to some older post, the S3 I9305 does not seem to be supported by replicant.

One last question, in the hardware table of the S3, those piece of hardware who contain "proprietary" in their status,
are they functional after replicant installation ? or do we need to install additional (and proprietary) software
do make it work ?
In particular what about the front camera ? in the hardware table no proprietary software seems required
for camera, but in the ReplicantStatus page it seems different for the front camera.
Thank you for your help
best regards

One last question, in the hardware table of the S3, those piece of hardware who contain "proprietary" in their status, are they functional after replicant installation ?
It says "Missing without non-free firmwares" and those non-free firmwares are not shipped with Replicant, so it won't work out of the box with Replicant.
do we need to install additional (and proprietary) software do make it work ?
That's a fair assumption.
In particular what about the front camera ? in the hardware table no proprietary software seems required for camera, but in the ReplicantStatus page it seems different for the front camera.
I forgot to mention it then. It is fixed now, sorry for the confusion.
