Yesterday I created my account on redmine.replicant.us after playing with LineageOS and guix-android1 for a long time. I am not only interested in smartphones and tablets, but also in VR devices. Since the Meta Quest (and most likely other Android based VR devices) violate the GPL, I decided to build my own VR hardware with Respects Your Freedom (RYF) certification in mind. I started by picking the ICE40HX8K-CB132 FPGA and TS4231infrared reciever IC for SteamVR. For the Meta Quest, tracking is implemented using cameras and a non-free program that runs on a Qualcomm Hexagon core. I recently found out that Monado2 has an Android port, but currently lacks any 6dof tracking.
I own a Talos II Desktop Development System and a Valve Index and recently began porting Godot VR games from Android to GNU/Linux. Unfortunately the Android build system (soong) won´t run on my Talos II, so I cannot compile the Meta Quest kernel on my machine. Thanks to libsurvive3 I can use my Valve Index without the non-free SteamVR and I get good tracking. The Lynx R14 is an interesting device, which I won´t buy until it complies with the GPL. I think a DIY device is a better option.
