replicant for single purpose devices?
Added by Patrick McCavery almost 11 years ago
Hi Everyone
This is my first post here. I have not read all of the documentation yet, I am just hoping that someone will let me know if I am in the right place. I am trying to design free software to create assimilative speech devices. There are already several such as Proloquo. They are not FLOSS. I am planning on making a business out of it by consulting.
I have a Samsung GT-P3113 here and I am thinking about giving Replicant a go. It looks like screen support and sound are working on this target. I am planning on making a bunch of buttons with pictures and words played when they are pressed. Is this logical?
I know this is a new project with limited funding but does it seem ready for single purpose uses like this?
BTW you might want to promote single purpose use of Replicant. I can imagine it being used as a sort of "front end" to other hardware, like an intelligent screen. It's unbelieveable how much value is in the hardware of these targets, too bad about the main stream software.

That's correct. All the devices that are currently supported have to support a minimal set of basic features: screen, sound, usable graphics, etc.

That's definitely possible in Android, so it will work in Replicant as well!

Of course! Replicant can do much more complex tasks. It is just as advanced as Android 4.2 or CyanogenMod 10.1, except where it relies on hardware features that require proprietary software. For what you mention, that's not the case, so Replicant will work just fine.
