Another way

Added by fulano perez almost 11 years ago

hello!

i've read about cellphone security and always hear baseband this, baseband that.
is is possible to use another phone as gateway? for instance, i buy galaxy s2, put replicant on it,
kill baseband then use nokia n900 (good modem isolation so they say) to route calls over bluetooth?
that way baseband can't access my data, right? i know bluetooth is missing without non-free firmwares,
but surely that would be a good compromise?

There are many way to do this, but all are very hard to implement.
Mostrly beacuse you'd have to write drivers for whatever that device is,
that you want to use. One suggestion would be to look for a mobile USB
stick and find an appropriate driver compiled for some modem-less Android
tablet. Another example is to use an OsmocomBB phone, but that would
require even more HW and FW hacking. But I simply don't see the point
of putting Replicant on it, if you're not going to use it?

So, you can't route calls and messages that way?
I've read about USB stick approach but that is so incovenient.
No battery pack can power it for a decent amount of time.
I intend to use Replicant, just want to isolate the damn thing properly.
Neo900 seems promising but can't afford THAT much money.
What do you think of guardianrom? Seems to implement xen for isolation,
can similar be done on Replicant?

Thanks for your reply

Well I suppose you might as well directly use a device with good modem isolation. The Galaxy S 2 (I9100) is actually not so bad since the modem link is HSIC and not shared memory. It might be able to access the GPS directly but this looks less and less likely (I should check the precise sources of info about this).

You could also wait for the Neo900 or get a GTA04, which has good modem isolation as well.

I don't see any easy way to route calls from one phone to another that would be available right now, even though it can be done with a computer (learn about HFP and SCO bluetooth profiles). I think we just lack software implementations for this on Android, though Bluetooth does permit it.
Bluetooth seems the easier way, but you could probably come up with something using USB but then again, nothing is there already and you would have to write the software to do this.
