I would like to add a note on SPLASH IMAGE (NOT the boot animation but the coloured X, which is the first thing you see when you boot your phone).
To flash the splash1 image on an android phone, you need to set your Android phone's security level to S-OFF otherwise it will complain about wrong signatures.
I found this tool to do it but Nexus One is currently unsupported: http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/forever
