Maintained versions¶

Replicant 11.0¶

A port of Replicant to Android 11 was being worked on, and we manage to boot Replicant 11.0 on devices, but the result required much more work to be usable daily, and due to the phasing out of the GSM/2G/3G cellular networks, the work shifted to porting Replicant to the Pinephone (which has 4G support). But this required to ship a bootloader and the circumstances led the Replicant maintainer to work on GNU Boot instead (it's a long story).

• The work on Replicant 11 is made with the Galaxy SIII (GT-I9300), so it should be supported.
• The Galaxy Note II (GT-N7100) is very similar to the Galaxy SIII but requires a bit more work to be supported. So they could probably be added if someone steps up to do the work.
• The Galaxy SII (GT-I9100) also seem to require a bit more work.
• The Galaxy SIII 4G (GT-I9305) and Galaxy Note II 4G (GT-N7105) could also be added if work is done to add support for their modem in Replicant
• We don't know yet how much work is needed to add support for the other devices that are currently supported by Replicant 6.0, so we don't know yet if they will be compatible with Replicant 11 or not. We would need to find or get more information on the upstream status of theses devices before having a rough idea.
• It will be easier to add support for devices using a mainline kernel, so if they meet the requirements set for Replicant 11, they could be added as well if someone steps up to do the work.

Replicant 6.0¶

• 3G networks are removed in some regions of the world (but not everywhere) and Replicant doesn't support devices that are compatible with 4G and 4G voice calls yet. Though in theses case GSM will probably still work if it worked before.
• The TLS certificates are outdated. Many websites and F-Droid don't work anymore because of that. It is however possible to add or update new certificates manually but this is time consuming.
• Many Android applications require an Android version more recent than Android 6.0.
• In some circumstance the sound quality in calls is really bad (see the bug #1773 for more details).

• Replicant 6.0 cannot be built with a GNU/Linux distribution that is compliant with the GNU Free System distribution guidelines.
• Because Android build system didn't use a package manager, finding the license of each repository isn't trivial (bug #1973). We need to do more investigations on that, as the licenses are printed in the device information in the settings.
• Similarly we don't know the license of the Webview component as looking at the license of each repository used to build it isn't trivial (bug #1786). The licenses are also printed in the device information in the settings.

• The last security update for Android 6 is from October 2017 .
• The Webview browser component is outdated and has security issues because of that (bug #1786).
